It is easy to assume that choosing between Ueno and Asakusa is a choice of scenery. The walk figures the hotels publish say the choice starts somewhere else, at the station and exit the minutes are counted from. KOKO HOTEL Ueno-Ekimae states 1 minute from a Metro exit at Ueno Station and 3 from JR Ueno’s Hirokoji Exit. In Asakusa, The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon states 2 minutes from a Ginza Line exit and 8 from the Tsukuba Express station that is also called Asakusa, and Asakusa View Hotel Annex Rokku states 2 minutes from that Tsukuba Express station and 10 from the Toei Asakusa Line station.
Seven hotels follow, three in Ueno and Okachimachi and four in Asakusa. All seven are chain or group hotels, from compact business hotels to a larger annex hotel. The walks and room figures are the hotels’ own. There are no advertising or affiliate links on this page. Room rates are left out because they move with the date, so the tables show room size and bed only.
Each double is the smallest room the hotel does not call a single, with one bed 55 inches (140 cm) wide or more. A room named Single / Double would count if listed for 1 to 2 guests. Each twin is the smallest room the hotel calls a twin. Accessible, connecting, bunk, loft and capsule rooms are set aside, and so are rooms restricted to certain guests, such as women-only floors.

One name, four Asakusa stations
Asakusa. JNTO lists four stations for Senso-ji, the Ginza Line, the Toei Asakusa Line, the Tobu Skytree Line and the Tsukuba Express, and says the temple is 5 minutes on foot from any of them. The hotels’ walks to those same four stations are not the same. Gracery states 3 minutes to the Toei station, 5 to the Ginza and Tobu stations and 7 to the Tsukuba Express. The Gate states 2 to the Ginza Line, 3 to the Toei, 4 to Tobu and 8 to the Tsukuba Express. KOKO Komagata states 1 minute to the Toei station’s A2-b elevator exit and 14 to the Tsukuba Express. Annex Rokku reverses it, 2 minutes to the Tsukuba Express and 10 to the Toei station. “Asakusa Station, 3 minutes” means little until you know which line.
Senso-ji’s own site calls Kaminari-mon the temple’s main gate and Nakamise one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan. JNTO puts about 90 stalls on Nakamise and says the temple and shops close around 5 p.m., and it says Senso-ji is lit from sunset until around 11 p.m.
Ueno. JNTO says Ueno is on the JR Yamanote Line and is also served by the Ginza and Hibiya subway lines, that Ueno Park holds six museums, and that the park is across the street from JR Ueno Station’s Park Exit. The Tokyo National Museum, in the park, states it is closed on Mondays (excluding holidays, when it opens on the Monday and closes the following day). It states it opens 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and on Sundays when the following Monday is a holiday. JNTO describes Ameyoko as under the elevated railway between JR Ueno and Okachimachi stations.
Ueno’s exits carry names too. KOKO Ueno-Ekimae’s 3 minutes is from JR Ueno’s Hirokoji Exit, and Super Hotel states about 5 minutes from JR Ueno and carries the Iriya Exit in its name. Villa Fontaine counts from the Okachimachi stations instead, 3 minutes from Shin-Okachimachi Exit A2 and 10 from JR Okachimachi’s north exit.

From Hotel Villa Fontaine: the room list. From Hotel Gracery Asakusa: the guest rooms page. From The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon (in Japanese): the Modest page. From Asakusa View Hotel (in Japanese): the Annex Rokku rooms page. Not listed means the hotel gives no figure for that item. The inches are converted from centimeters, and the square feet from square meters.

Six of the seven list a double-bed room, and the smallest start between 129 and 314 ft² (12 and 29.2 m²). KOKO Ueno-Ekimae and Super Hotel list 129 ft² (12 m²), KOKO Komagata lists 140 ft² (13 m²), Gracery lists 194 ft² (18 m²), The Gate lists a range of 161 to 205 ft² (15 to 19 m²) for its Modest rooms, and Annex Rokku’s Standard Queen is 314 ft² (29.2 m²), more than twice the smallest floor. Four of the six have 55 inch (140 cm) beds. Super Hotel’s Standard Room has a 59 inch (150 cm) bed and Annex Rokku’s has 63 inches (160 cm). Can Two Adults Sleep on a 140 cm Hotel Bed? covers what a 140 cm width leaves each person.

Some rows come with a note. KOKO Ueno-Ekimae also lists a Single at the same 129 ft² (12 m²) and 55 inch (140 cm) bed, and it gives 70 rooms for the Single and 11 for the Economy Double. Villa Fontaine’s room list has two twin types and no double. The Gate gives one range for Modest, which it lists for the 4th to 12th floors.
Bath types are given by only some of these hotels. KOKO Komagata says every room has a unit bath. KOKO Ueno-Ekimae lists a unit bath among its room facilities and describes its twins as having a separate bath, toilet and washbasin. Annex Rokku says its Standard rooms have a separate bath and toilet, and The Gate’s Modest page lists a shower booth. The entries for Gracery, Super Hotel and Villa Fontaine give no bath type. The Unit Bath in a Japanese Business Hotel explains what each type means.

From Hotel Villa Fontaine: the room list. From Hotel Gracery Asakusa: the guest rooms page. From The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon (in Japanese): the Essential page and the Authentic page. From Asakusa View Hotel (in Japanese): the Annex Rokku rooms page. The inches are converted from centimeters, and the square feet from square meters.
Six hotels list a twin, from 140 to 308 ft² (13 to 28.6 m²). Super Hotel lists a Standard Room, a Super Room with a loft bed and a Ladies Room, so it has no twin to compare. Villa Fontaine is the reverse, with a 172 ft² (16 m²) Twin and a 215 ft² (20 m²) Superior Twin, and no double.

Bed widths fall into three groups. Villa Fontaine’s Twin and KOKO Komagata’s twin have 35 inch (90 cm) beds, in the two smallest rooms of the table. Gracery and Annex Rokku list 43 inch (110 cm) beds, at 253 and 308 ft² (23.5 and 28.6 m²). KOKO Ueno-Ekimae and The Gate list 47 inch (120 cm) beds, at 205 and 258 ft² (19 and 24 m²). KOKO Komagata’s smallest twin-named room is the 140 ft² (13 m²) one in the table, and it also lists a Twin Room at 151 ft² (14 m²), both with two 35 inch (90 cm) beds. The Gate lists a Twin on its Essential page and a Hollywood Twin on its Authentic page, both 258 ft² (24 m²), the Hollywood Twin with two 47 inch (120 cm) beds placed side by side.

Narita arrivals
Keisei states that the Skyliner runs from Narita Airport to Keisei Ueno in as little as 41 minutes. It gives no Asakusa time. Keisei’s FAQ lists the Access Express as mainly serving Oshiage, Asakusa and Haneda Airport.
From Keisei Ueno, KOKO Ueno-Ekimae states 5 minutes on foot from the front exit, and Super Hotel and Villa Fontaine give no walk from that station. In Asakusa, KOKO Komagata (1 minute) and Gracery (3) state their shortest walks from Toei Asakusa Line exits, The Gate states 2 minutes from Ginza Line Exit 2, and Annex Rokku states 2 minutes from the Tsukuba Express station.

Matching the area to the trip
- Asakusa suits a day at the temple. JNTO calls Senso-ji Tokyo’s most famous temple, puts it 5 minutes from Asakusa Station, and calls the Sumida River fireworks a highlight of the summer. The Gate and KOKO Komagata state 2 and 1 minutes to their nearest subway exits, so the walk back after the shops close around 5 p.m. is short, and the temple is lit until around 11 p.m.
- Ueno suits a day of museums and the park. JNTO says the park is right next to the station and holds six museums, and KOKO Ueno-Ekimae states 1 minute to a Metro exit. The Tokyo National Museum is closed on Mondays, which matters if Monday is your museum day.
- Ueno suits a Skyliner arrival. Keisei’s 41 minutes is to Keisei Ueno, and KOKO Ueno-Ekimae is 5 minutes from there. For Asakusa, Keisei names the Access Express and gives no minutes.
- Either works as a base for the other. JNTO says the Ginza Line serves both Ueno and Asakusa, so the choice is about the next morning’s plan, not about reaching the other area.
- The rooms do not settle it. The smallest doubles are 129 ft² at both Ueno hotels that list one and 140 to 314 ft² in Asakusa, and the twins run 172 to 205 ft² in Ueno and Okachimachi and 140 to 308 ft² in Asakusa, so compare the specific row.
- Two people, one bed. Read Bed and Guests together. KOKO Ueno-Ekimae, Gracery and KOKO Komagata list no guest count, while Annex Rokku lists 1 to 3 with a 63 inch (160 cm) bed.
The short version
- Five of the seven hotels state 1 to 3 minutes from a subway exit (KOKO Ueno-Ekimae, Villa Fontaine, Gracery, The Gate and KOKO Komagata), and the same name “Asakusa Station” ranges from 1 to 14 minutes depending on the line.
- At six hotels the smallest double-bed rooms start at 129 to 314 ft² (12 to 29.2 m²) with beds 55 to 63 inches (140 to 160 cm) wide, and the smallest twins run from 140 to 308 ft² (13 to 28.6 m²) at six.
- Keisei states that the Skyliner reaches Keisei Ueno in as little as 41 minutes, and that the Access Express mainly serves Oshiage, Asakusa and Haneda Airport.
