In the US, a bed name is a size. A queen is 60 by 80 inches (152 by 203 cm) and a king is 76 by 80 (193 by 203 cm), so the word on a booking page answers the question.
Japan has bed names too, and they form a ladder: single, semi-double, double, queen, king. Bedding makers print a width for each rung. Hotels use the same words and then fit the bed to the room, so the ladder holds at one hotel and slides up a rung at the next. Some rooms called single have a bed wider than a US queen.

Japanese bed sizes next to US sizes
| Name on the page | Bedmaker’s table | Printed on hotel pages | Closest US size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single (シングル) | 38 to 39 in (97 to 100 cm) | 39 to 63 in (100 to 160 cm) | Twin, 38 in (97 cm) |
| Semi-double (セミダブル) | 47 in (120 cm) | 47 to 55 in (120 to 140 cm) | Between a twin and a full, 7 in under a full at 120 cm |
| Double (ダブル) | 55 in (140 cm) | 55 to 71 in (140 to 180 cm) | Full, 54 in (137 cm) |

As of October 2026, from Nihonbashi Nishikawa (in Japanese): size table. Hotel pages (in Japanese unless noted): single 100 cm at Dormy Inn Korakuen and 160 cm at Richmond Fukuyama. Semi-double 120 cm at Dormy Inn Korakuen and 140 cm at Route Inn Ishinomaki. Double 140 cm at Dormy Inn Korakuen and 180 cm at Richmond Tokyo Shiba. Queen 150 cm at Vessel Hotel Ishigaki and 160 cm at Dormy Inn Ikebukuro. King 170 cm at Imperial Hotel Tokyo (in English), with the 200 cm rooms in the king list below. Twin 90 cm at Super Hotel Anjo, 122 cm at Richmond Tokyo Shiba and 140 cm at Richmond Fukuyama. US sizes from Sleep Foundation’s chart.
The bedmaker’s column is one Japanese bedding company’s table, so read it as the usual retail ladder. Each width there is sold in lengths of 195 to 200 cm (77 to 79 in), against 75 inches for a US twin or full and 80 for a US queen or king.
The hotel column spans a wider range than the retail column in every row that has a retail number, and the rows overlap. A 140 cm bed is a semi-double at Route Inn Ishinomaki, a double at Dormy Inn Korakuen and the bed in a room called single at Richmond Tokyo Shiba. Across hotels the name says little, and inside one hotel it can fail too, as the booking story below shows.
Ryokan and Japanese-style rooms sit outside the chart. They use a futon, which in Japan is a mattress laid on tatami and in the US is usually a sofa frame that folds flat. What Does a Japanese-Style Room Mean? covers that label.
Deeper: Japanese Hotel Rooms Decoded shows how a room name fails to carry a bed width.
The same names, three ladders
| Hotel | Single room | Semi-double room | Double room | Wider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dormy Inn Korakuen | 39 in (100 cm) | 47 in (120 cm) | 55 in (140 cm) | Queen Room, 63 in (160 cm) |
| Route Inn Ishinomaki | 47 in (120 cm) | 55 in (140 cm) | 63 in (160 cm) | None listed |
| Richmond Fukuyama | 60 in (152 cm) or 63 in (160 cm) | None listed | 60 in (152 cm) or 63 in (160 cm) | Deluxe Double, 71 in (180 cm) |
Dormy Inn Korakuen follows the bedmaker’s ladder: 100, 120, 140 and 160 cm, with the queen at the top. Route Inn Ishinomaki sits one rung higher, so its semi-double is 140 cm and its double is the 160 cm that Dormy Inn calls a queen.
Richmond Fukuyama skips the middle. Its Moderate single and Moderate double both carry a 152 cm bed, which the hotel calls 「152cm幅のダブルベッド」. Its Superior single and double both carry 「160cm幅のクイーンサイズベッド」, and its Deluxe Double has 「180cm幅のキングサイズのベッド」. So its Superior Single holds the bed Dormy Inn Korakuen sells as a queen room.

What each name tells you
The last column halves each width and ignores the gap between sleepers, the blankets and how anyone lies.

Single. A single room is a room sold for one guest. Its bed runs from 39 inches (100 cm) at Dormy Inn Korakuen to 63 (160 cm) at Richmond Fukuyama’s Superior Single, a gap of 24 inches (60 cm).
Semi-double. The bedmaker’s table calls the 120 cm bed one for one person with room to spare. Hotels use the word loosely. Dormy Inn Korakuen’s Semi-double Room is 120 cm and lists 2 guests, Route Inn Ishinomaki’s is 140 cm, and Sotetsu Fresa Inn Tokyo-Kyobashi’s is one 120 cm single bed. On 47 inches, two adults get about 23.5 inches (60 cm) each.
As of October 2026, from Dormy Inn, Route Inn and Sotetsu Hotels (in Japanese): Korakuen, Ishinomaki and Kyobashi room pages.
Double. Dormy Inn Ikebukuro’s Standard Double is 140 by 195 cm (55 by 77 in) for 2 guests, and Super Hotel Anjo’s Double Room is 140 by 200 cm for 1 to 2. Each of two adults gets about 27.5 inches, a half inch more than on a US full and 2.5 less than on a US queen. The top of the double range is a different bed. Richmond Tokyo Shiba’s Deluxe Double is 180 cm (71 in), which it calls king-size, in a 25 m² (269 ft²) room.

Queen and king. Queen is the steadier name, and king runs wide. The table below counts rooms that call their bed queen or king, so it shows what the words mean and not how many hotels have one.
| Bed called | Width | Rooms | Against a US queen (60 in) or king (76 in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queen | 59 in (150 cm) | 1 | 1 in under a queen |
| Queen | 63 in (160 cm) | 6 | 3 in over a queen |
| King | 67 in (170 cm) | 1 | 9 in under a king |
| King | 71 in (180 cm) | 6 | 5 in under a king |
| King | 79 in (200 cm) | 3 | 3 in over a king |
| King Double | 94 in (240 cm) | 1 | Page says “240 cm wide bed”, not how many beds |
As of October 2026, from the hotels’ room pages, seven queen rooms and eleven king rooms at fifteen hotels. Queens (in Japanese unless noted): Dormy Inn Hiroshima, Dormy Inn Ikebukuro, Art Hotel Morioka, Vessel Hotel Ishigaki, and in English Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Ikebukuro, Hotel Monterey Kyoto and Park Hotel Tokyo. Kings: Meitetsu Komaki Hotel, Miyako City Tokyo Takanawa, Richmond Hotel Tokyo Shiba, Hilton Nagoya and Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho in Japanese, and in English the Imperial Hotel Tokyo Tower Standard and Imperial Floor Superior, Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Marunouchi, Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Ikebukuro, Park Hotel Tokyo and Karaksa Hotel Tokyo Station. US sizes from Sleep Foundation.
Six of the seven queen rooms are 160 cm. The seventh, at Vessel Hotel Ishigaki, is 150 cm on a page titled 「全室クィーンサイズベッド」 (all rooms queen-size bed). Toyoko Inn uses the word with no centimeters at all: 「シングルルームにはダブルサイズ、ダブルルームにはクイーンサイズのベッドをご用意。」 That says single rooms get a double-size bed and double rooms a queen-size one.
For kings, 180 cm is the most common width in this list, five inches under a US king, and only the 200 cm rooms clear 76 inches. The Imperial Hotel Tokyo lists a 170 cm king in one room and a 180 cm king in another. Karaksa Hotel Tokyo Station calls its room a “King Double” and lists a “240 cm wide bed” without saying whether that is one bed or two, so the 67-to-79-inch range in the chart leaves it out.
As of October 2026, from Toyoko Inn (in Japanese): room page.
Twin. Twin is a room with two beds, and each bed is whatever that hotel installed. It is 35 inches (90 cm) in Super Hotel Anjo’s Economy Twin, 43 (110) in Dormy Inn Ikebukuro’s Standard Twin and 48 (122) in Richmond Tokyo Shiba’s, against 38 for a US twin. Richmond Fukuyama describes its Superior Twin as a 「ハリウッドツイン」 of two 110 cm beds placed side by side, and its Universal Twin lists two beds of 140 cm (55 inches), wider than any of the standard twins above.

Where the width is printed
The width sits on the hotel’s own room page, in a labeled box. Two chains show the pattern, each for its double room.
| What you want | Dormy Inn, Standard Double | Super Hotel Anjo, Double Room |
|---|---|---|
| Bed width and length | ベッドサイズ 140cm*195cm | ベッドサイズ 140cm ×200cm |
| Floor area | 客室面積 13.9~14.5㎡ | 部屋の広さ 12㎡ |
| Guest count | ご利用人数 2人 | 収容人数 1~2名 |
After the width, 台 counts the beds. Dormy Inn Ikebukuro’s Standard Twin reads 110cm*195cm2台, two beds of 110 by 195 cm. Richmond Hotels puts the guest count, floor area and width in a row of icons under each room, as 122cm×2 for its Standard Twin at Tokyo Shiba, and repeats the width in a sentence such as 「140cm幅のダブルベッド」. Some pages print millimeters. Dormy Inn Korakuen’s Double Room reads 1400×1950, which is 140 by 195 cm.

The box can be missing or misleading. Toyoko Inn’s chain page, quoted above, names a bed size and gives no centimeters. English booking sites add their own wording. In September 2026, Booking.com’s English listing for Sotetsu Fresa Inn Tokyo-Kyobashi named one room “Economy Double Room with Small Double Bed”, and the line under the name read “1 twin bed”. The hotel’s own Japanese page calls that room a semi-double with one 120 cm single bed, which is 47 inches. Neither English label gives the width.
The guest count and the width are separate lines, and neither says whether the bed is comfortable for that many people. The guest count is only the number the page prints for the room.

The cheap room that was too small for two
Long ago I searched for two, found a cheap room that was a single or a semi-double (I don’t remember which), and booked it. It was too tight for the two of us. The room had come back from a search for two.
Richmond Tokyo Shiba shows how that happens. It sells a Single and a Double at the same 16 m² (172 ft²), both with a 140 cm bed, and only the capacity line differs, 1 against 2. Super Hotel Anjo’s Standard Room lists a 120 cm or a 140 cm bed, 12 m² (129 ft²), for 1 to 2 guests. So when a search for two returns a room called single, I look twice.
As of October 2026, from Richmond Hotels and Super Hotel (in Japanese): Richmond Tokyo Shiba and Super Hotel Anjo room pages.
Narrow rooms bring a second problem that no width line shows. If one long side of the bed is against the wall, the person on that side has to climb over the other to get out, and I climb over. The room photos settle it: look for floor on both long sides of the bed.
Match the bed at home to the centimeters
I only open the bed-width line when two of us are going. If that is you, read it against the bed you sleep on at home.
- A US full at home. A 140 cm bed (55 in) is close to the same bed, one inch wider.
- A US queen. Look for 160 cm (63 in), 3 inches over. A 150 cm bed is an inch under. The bedmaker’s table puts 2 guests on the 160 cm queen.
- A US king. Look for 200 cm (79 in) or more. The common 180 cm king is 5 inches under.
- Your own bed each. Book a twin and read the width per bed, 35 to 48 inches on the standard twins above.
- A name and a guest count, no centimeters. You don’t have the width. Ask the hotel or pick a room that prints one.
Length is a separate line. Most hotel pages above list 195 or 200 cm (77 or 79 in), one to three inches under the 80 inches of a US queen or king, while the Imperial Hotel Tokyo lists 205 cm (81 in). Anyone tall should read the length for the room they book.
At the same price I take floor space over a wider bed, and the two move independently. Dormy Inn Korakuen’s single is 19.5 m² (210 ft²) with a 100 cm bed, and its double is 14.4 to 17.8 m² (155 to 192 ft²) with a 140 cm bed. That is my own call, and yours may go the other way if you sleep badly next to someone.

The short version
- The names form a ladder on the bedmaker’s table, and hotels slide it. A 140 cm bed turns up as a semi-double, a double and a single.
- Twin is two beds, 35 to 48 inches (90 to 122 cm) each on the standard twins above.
- For two people, read ベッドサイズ and the guest count on the hotel’s own page. A full at home is about 140 cm, a queen about 160 cm and a king 200 cm.
